11+ tutoring in Barking for the Redbridge grammar school test

Quick answer

LCB runs small-group 11+ tutoring for Years 4–6 at our Barking centre and online. Groups of 3–5 cover Maths, English, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, with timed practice for the Redbridge test. Plans start at £52 a month for one lesson a week. Every child starts with a free 30-minute assessment.

Who is 11+ tutoring for?

Our 11+ groups are for children in Years 4, 5 and 6 who are preparing for a grammar school test. Most of our families in Barking, Ilford and East Ham are aiming for the two Redbridge grammar schools.

Some children join early to build strong basics. Others join in Year 5, when the test is less than a year and a half away. Both work, but earlier gives more time and less pressure.

If you are not sure your child is ready, the free assessment will tell you where they are now.

How does the Redbridge 11+ work?

The Redbridge 11+ is the entry test for Ilford County High School (boys) and Woodford County High School (girls). According to the Redbridge 11+ information page, children sit two papers: English and Verbal Reasoning, and Mathematics and Non-Verbal Reasoning.

Parents register while their child is in Year 5, and the test is sat at the start of Year 6. For 2027 entry, registration ran from 1 May to 15 June 2026, and the test was on 18 September 2026.

Only children who live in the common catchment area can get an offer. That area covers all of Redbridge and Waltham Forest, plus parts of Barking & Dagenham, Newham and Essex. Many Barking postcodes are inside it, but not all.

We explain how to check your address in Redbridge 11+ catchment: does Barking count?. For timing, read when to start 11+ preparation.

What do 11+ lessons cover?

Each lesson builds the four skills the test checks, then practises them under time pressure.

  • Maths: arithmetic, fractions, ratio, area and word problems, often a little beyond the Year 6 curriculum.
  • English: reading comprehension, vocabulary, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Verbal reasoning: word codes, letter patterns, hidden words and logic. Read verbal and non-verbal reasoning explained for examples.
  • Non-verbal reasoning: shapes, sequences, rotations and spotting the odd one out.
  • Timed practice: short timed sections and full mock papers, so speed and calm become habits.

We also teach exam technique. That means pacing, checking answers and not getting stuck on one question.

What does a year-by-year plan look like?

The right plan depends on your child's year group and starting point. This is a typical path.

Year group Main focus Suggested plan
Year 4 Times tables, reading, vocabulary, first reasoning puzzles Essential (1 lesson a week)
Year 5 Full 11+ topics in Maths, English, VR and NVR, plus regular timed practice Progress (2 lessons a week)
Year 6 (to September) Mock papers, exam technique, closing final gaps Exam Ready (3 lessons a week)

These are suggestions, not rules. After the assessment we recommend a plan based on what we see, and you can change it at any time.

How much does 11+ tutoring cost?

All 11+ plans are monthly, with no contract and no hidden fees. You can cancel any time.

Plan Lessons Price per month Per lesson

Why choose LCB for the 11+?

We keep groups small, between 3 and 5 children. Your child gets real attention and still learns from working alongside others.

  • Same tutor every week, so they know your child's strengths and gaps.
  • Monthly progress report, so you always know how things are going.
  • Safe centre: Ofsted registered, DBS-checked tutors, cameras and a front desk. Female tutors are available on request, and prayer times are respected.
  • Strong teachers: our tutors studied at top UK universities, and our founders are Imperial College London graduates.
  • In person or online: every plan works at our Barking centre or in live online lessons.

We also teach Maths and English beyond the 11+, so your child can stay with us into secondary school.

Questions parents ask

Do you guarantee a grammar school place?
No. Nobody can honestly guarantee a place. We give your child strong skills, plenty of timed practice and clear feedback, so they go into the test as ready as they can be.
Is 11+ preparation useful if my child does not get a place?
Yes. The Maths, reading and reasoning skills help in Year 7 at any school. If the result is disappointing, read our guide on what to do if your child didn't pass the 11+.
Do you prepare children for Essex grammar schools too?
Our lessons cover Maths, English, verbal and non-verbal reasoning, which are the core skills for most grammar school tests. Tell us which schools you are applying to at the assessment and we will plan around them.
Can my child join in the middle of Year 5?
Yes. New groups start every month. We use the assessment to place your child in a group at the right level.
Do you set homework?
Yes, a short amount each week to practise what was covered in class. It is designed to fit around school homework, not replace it.
