Parents guide
Can I find a female tutor for my daughter in Barking?
Quick answer
Yes. Many families in Barking prefer a female tutor, and it is a reasonable thing to ask for. At LCB, female tutors are available on request for 11+, GCSE and A-Level, in person at our Barking centre or online. Ask when you book your free assessment, and we will tell you honestly what we can offer.
Lots of parents ask us for a female tutor, especially for teenage daughters. Some ask for reasons of faith or culture. Some just know their child will feel more relaxed and ask more questions. Whatever the reason, you do not need to explain or apologise. A good tutoring provider will treat it as a normal request.
Is it OK to ask for a female tutor?
Yes. Asking for a female tutor is a normal, reasonable request, and a good provider will not make you feel awkward about it.
The Department for Education's parent and carer's guide says you "should feel able to ask questions" about a provider, and that a "well-run and trustworthy provider will welcome questions." That includes questions about who will be teaching your child.
Why do some families prefer a female tutor?
Families choose a female tutor for comfort, confidence and faith, and all of these are good reasons.
The reasons we hear most often in Barking, Dagenham and Ilford are:
- Comfort. Some girls, particularly in their teens, speak up more and ask "silly" questions more easily with a woman.
- Faith and culture. Some families prefer their daughters to be taught by women.
- Confidence. Some children who are shy with adults they do not know settle faster with a female tutor.
- Role models. Some girls are inspired by seeing a woman who is strong in Maths or Science.
None of these is about one tutor being better than another. It is about your child feeling settled enough to learn.
What should I ask before I book?
Ask whether a female tutor is guaranteed for every lesson, what happens if she is away, and who else will be in the room.
Useful questions:
- Is a female tutor available for my child's subject and level? Availability can differ between, say, A-Level Chemistry and 11+ English.
- Will it be the same tutor every week? Children learn better with one familiar person.
- What happens if she is ill or leaves? Ask whether the cover tutor will also be female.
- Is the group mixed? Ask whether boys will be in the same group, if that matters to you.
- Who else will be present? The DfE guide suggests asking whether any other adults will be present while your child is there.
- Can lessons fit around prayer times? If timing matters for your family, say so at the start.
Should I still check safety with a female tutor?
Yes. Every tutor should pass the same safety checks, whoever they are.
Ask to see an enhanced DBS check, a child protection policy and the name of the safeguarding lead. If a tutor will work one-to-one with your child, the DfE guide says you may wish to supervise sessions. Our full checklist is in how to choose a safe tutor.
Is a female tutor at home, at a centre or online better?
Each works. It depends on what makes your family most comfortable.
| Option | Good for | Things to think about |
|---|---|---|
| Female private tutor at home | Families who want lessons at home | Usually the most expensive; you arrange the safety checks |
| Female tutor at a centre | A calm, supervised setting outside the home | Check the travel time and the group mix |
| Female tutor online | Families who prefer their child to learn from home | Keep the device in a shared room; check the online safety policy |
Private one-to-one tutors in London often charge about £30–£60 an hour for GCSE, according to one London agency's guide and a London price guide. Our guide to tutor costs in East London compares the options.
How does LCB support families who want a female tutor?
At LCB, female tutors are available on request, and we respect prayer times.
Here is what that means in practice:
- Female tutors on request. Tell us when you book, and we will match your child with a female tutor where one is available for their subject and level. If we cannot, we will tell you honestly before you pay anything.
- The same tutor every week. Your child gets to know one person.
- Prayer times respected. Let us know what your family needs, and we will work with you on lesson times.
- A safe centre. We are Ofsted registered, all tutors are DBS checked, and our Barking centre has cameras and a staffed front desk.
- Small groups. Lessons are in groups of 3–5 students, not one-to-one, in person or live online.
We do not promise single-sex groups. If that matters to your family, ask us about the current groups for your child's year, and we will be straight with you.
