Ilford and Redbridge

Tutoring in Ilford: 11+, GCSE and A-Level

Quick answer

Ilford families can join LCB's small groups (3–5 students) at our Barking centre, which the EL1 and 169 buses link to Ilford, or study live online. We prepare children for the Redbridge 11+ (Ilford County High and Woodford County High) and teach GCSE and A-Level Maths, Science and English from £52 a month.

Why do Ilford families start with the 11+?

Because Ilford is in Redbridge, and Redbridge has two grammar schools. Many Ilford parents first contact us in Year 4 or Year 5.

The two schools are Ilford County High School, a selective boys' school on Fremantle Road, Barkingside, and Woodford County High School, a selective girls' school on High Road, Woodford Green. Both take students aged 11 to 18.

Here is how the Redbridge 11+ works, according to Redbridge Council:

Question Answer
Who sets the test? GL Assessment
What are the papers? English and Verbal Reasoning; Maths and Non-Verbal Reasoning
When do children register? In Year 5 (for 2027 entry: 1 May to 15 June 2026)
When is the test? In Year 6 (for 2027 entry: Friday 18 September 2026)
When are results sent? By email in the middle of October
Who can be offered a place? Only children living in the common catchment area

Every Ilford address is inside the catchment, because it covers all of Redbridge and Waltham Forest. That means competition is local and strong.

For a side-by-side look at the two schools, read Ilford County High vs Woodford County High. For timing, see when to start 11+ preparation.

How do the Redbridge grammar schools compare with other Ilford schools?

The two grammar schools had the highest GCSE scores in the borough in 2025. But several Ilford comprehensives also did well. This table uses the 2025 ranking from the Ilford Recorder.

School 2025 Attainment 8
Woodford County High School 79.9
Ilford County High School 75.5
Valentines High School (Cranbrook Road, Ilford) 58.5
Seven Kings School 57.1
The Ursuline Academy Ilford 56.0
Loxford School 54.3
Beal High School 51.9

So a child who does not get a grammar place still has good options. Our guide on what to do if your child didn't pass the 11+ covers next steps.

What about GCSE and A-Level students in Ilford?

Many Ilford teenagers come to us for GCSE Maths and Science, or for A-Level Maths, Biology and Chemistry. The usual aim is to secure 7s for a strong sixth form, or top A-Level grades for university.

We teach to your child's exam board, so it does not matter which Ilford school they attend. In our groups, a Seven Kings student and a Loxford student can sit side by side if they are working at the same level and on the same board.

If your child is in a grammar school and finding the pace hard, small-group support can help them keep up without the cost of one-to-one. See our GCSE tutoring and A-Level tutoring pages.

How do Ilford students get to the Barking centre?

By bus is usually simplest, because two routes run straight from Ilford to Barking Station.

  • EL1 runs from Ilford Station / Ilford Hill to Barking Station, according to TfL's EL1 route data.
  • 169 runs from Barkingside and Ilford town centre (Chapel Road) to Barking Station, according to TfL's 169 route data.

Our centre is at Roding House, Cambridge Rd, Barking IG11 8NL, a short walk from Barking Station. Journey times change, so please check the TfL Journey Planner from your home.

If the trip does not suit your evenings, every plan also works online, with the same tutor and group size.

Questions parents ask

Is Ilford inside the Redbridge 11+ catchment area?
Yes. The common catchment area covers all of Redbridge, which includes Ilford. You still need to register your child during the registration window in Year 5.
Do you prepare children for the GL Assessment style of test?
Yes. Redbridge Council says its test is set by GL Assessment, with English and verbal reasoning in one paper and maths and non-verbal reasoning in the other. We practise both styles in class.
Where can I find free Redbridge 11+ practice material?
Redbridge Council points parents to free familiarisation materials from GL Assessment. Our guide to free 11+ practice papers lists more options.
